Legends and Mysteries

When the dusk is falling over the Castle, in the moonlight, a white lady ghost is floating in the castle rooms. The legend says that this is Duchess Anna, bricked alive in the castle vaults. Among Ryn citizens there are uncanny stories running around about secret dungeons joining the Castle with a crypt of a non-existent church and a nearby graveyard.
Duke Vitold always desired the Lithuanian throne. He thought he was able to reach it only with the help of a powerful ally, The Order of the Teutonic Knights of St. Mary’s Hospital in Jerusalem, for short the Teutonic Order. Therefore, he used to be a frequent guest to the Castle Ryn, trying to negotiate with the Commander. Before the Great Battle of Grunwald in 1410, he visited the castle with his wife Anna and their children for the last time. Duke Vitold reached the agreement with the Order. He was supposed to support the Order in the decisive moment of the battle. As a guarantee of the agreement, the Teutonic Knights decided to keep Anna and her children as ‘special guests’ in the castle. As we all know, Vitold stuck by the Polish side (probably his warriors didn’t want to betray) – so the Teutonic Knights took a revenge on Anna and bricked her with the children alive in one of the castle niches. Since then, on some turbulent nights it is possible to hear and see a wandering ghost of Duchess Anna. She is said to bewail her murdered beloved children. In fact, in the 1980s during some reasearch works, archaeologists found three bricked niches but there was no sign of any bones.

* * *
The castle in Ryn was built in the 14th century on the isthmus between two lakes. There exist many fascinating facts and trivias about the stonghold and the town. This is where the Grand Master Winrich von Kniprode started his water vayage. His route ran across Masurian lakes, the river Narew, the Vistula to Toruń. Here he met with Duke Vitold while negotiating and conspiring with the Teutonic Knights against King Jagiello. Not far away from Ryn, there was a settlement of the Arians, earlier expelled from Poland. In the 17th century appeared the Tatars who were allied to the Polish king against the Swedish army. Moreover, under the town there were tunnels and a labyrinth of underground passages. That’s a hiding place of a mysterious, with mighty magic powers a medallion, once the possession of the Grand Masters. Paweł Daniec, a museologist, is going to find the treasure from the Holy Land.
